February 20th was the day we'd been looking forward to since the summer. You know, circled in red and anticipated wildly by not just us, according to the amount of texts I received yesterday. But here we are at 2/21 and this baby is still in my belly...with no signs of wanting to come out anytime soon.
We had a doctor appointment yesterday that included an ultrasound, non stress test and an internal exam. Good news is, Baby Boy is healthy and doing well. Fluid levels are good, his heart rate is great, he's a good size and I'm dilating slightly, so these are all things to be thankful for. But we thought for sure he'd be here by now. Not just me and my husband but my doctor thought it too! Baby is "really long" so we thought he'd be out of room. Turns out my "really long" torso is a little too accommodating.
So yesterday, after the doctor appointment, I came home, sat on my yoga ball, baked cookies, went for a long walk and put a ton of red pepper flakes on my pizza. And besides a bit of heartburn, I'm still pregnant. Did you know that only 34% of women go past their due date? This is according to my BabyCenter app. It seems like the number would be higher. I need the stats for first time moms going over their due dates. My mom was overdue with all three of her kids though so maybe it's another trait I've inherited. I'm the oldest and I was two days overdue. And I was also due on the 20th (of June). Maybe Baby Boy will take after his mama and show up tomorrow. Send good vibes, folks. I'm excited to meet this little guy!

Prep: Freezer Meals Before Baby Arrives
Two more days until my due date and it looks like this little guy is quite comfy where he is at. Not really experiencing any early labor. The contractions I was having a few weeks ago seem to have all but disappeared. I had a bit of mild cramping last night and the key word there is "mild." I thought for sure he was going to come early - at least a week before his due date. Then I had a premonition about the number 17 so I thought he'd come yesterday. Turns out I just have a lot of wishful thinking going on.
While we wait, I feel like I'm crawling the walls. I don't want to go too far from home "just in case." My long walks are becoming shorter because, even with my maternity belt, my belly feels so heavy and uncomfortable and I have to pee pretty much as soon as I start walking. We've cleaned out our DVR and are caught up on all of our shows. I watched some terrible movies that were on TV over the weekend (Knight and Day and When In Rome - save yourself and never watch them). I'm thinking of baking some more muffins this morning, this time pumpkin chocolate chip. And after that I guess I'll read a book? And do more laundry. I realize this down time will seem luxurious soon enough but still...
Over the weekend, to cope with some of this wall-crawling, I prepared 8 Slow Cooker Freezer Meals that I found over at Six Sisters' Stuff. My mom got us a crock pot for Christmas and I knew it would come in handy once baby arrived. The recipes that the Six Sisters blog has all sounded good, which is a rarity for me. Usually I like a couple of recipes when they come listed in large batches but this was different. We're talking French Dip Sandwiches and Beef Stew and Chicken Alfredo, to name a few. Also, this list is great because not only does it have the recipes but it has a shopping list to make all the recipes too. So hubby and I went on an epic grocery store trip and then I prepared these meals all afternoon.
Their blog says it takes only one hour to prepare these meals but it took me two hours. I cleaned up between each meal prep because I don't have a ton of room or a ton of utensils that I could've used prepping each meal. So that probably contributed to the extra time. I was also on the phone, hearing about my cousin's wedding in Florida that happened over the weekend, which I obviously could not make it too. So the chatting probably contributed to the extra time as well! But I think it will all be worth it when I can just throw a meal in a pot and have it ready to go without thinking about it! It looks like each meal will serve at least four people, which will be great when my family is visiting and it will also be great for leftovers when it's just our little family of three here.
I also made a large batch of waffles and grilled up some burgers and threw them in the freezer. Now there are a hearty breakfast and lunch choices to choose from too.
Murphy's Law is in play here, no doubt. The more prepared I get, the more likely this kid is going to want to stay in my womb forever...
Maybe I should slack off on the laundry today.

Happy Valentine's Day!
Guess we won't be forced to make our son's middle name Romeo. He seems to be staying put...through today at least! |
So Happy Valentine's Day. May it be full of all the love that matters. The love that lasts beyond these twenty-four hours. The love that fills you up and makes you whole.

Hospital Bag: What I Packed
One more week until due date...! I had a strong contraction this morning and got excited...but nothing since. Le sigh. At least my body is gearing up, I guess. In the meantime, I've been gearing up and went ahead and packed my hospital bag. Ok, so I packed it a couple weeks ago. I'm excited! And a little bored with the waiting around, hence my preparedness.
So here are the things, after looking through and checking the lists I've found, that I decided to bring with me.
First of all, I've packed two bags. One is a carry-on size duffle bag that holds all my clothes and the other is a shoulder bag with all of my toiletries. This way I don't have to dig through my carry-on looking for my toothbrush. I can just take the small bag into the bathroom and it has all that I need.
Inside the carry-on:
- Two nursing tanks
- 6 pack of Hanes undies (one size larger than I normally wear)
- Depends (1 pkg, size small)
- One nursing bra
- One robe
- Two button-down PJ tops
- Two pairs of PJ pants
- Two pairs fuzzy/warm socks
- Slippers (for walking the hospital halls)
- One pair of flip flops (for shower)
- Going home outfit for me: button down top, nursing tank, loose/comfy pants
- Going home outfit for Baby (in a separate bag, within carry-on):
- One kimono-buttoned onesie with soft pants and socks OR
- One footie pajama set (will choose between the two)
- Little knit cap
- One muslin swaddle blanket, if needed
Inside the toiletries bag:
- Two bright towels (not white so they don't get confused with the hospital ones)
- Four bright washclothes
- Baby nail clippers
- Makeup wipes (so I don't actually have to get out of bed to wash my face)
- Clips
- Headbands
- Lip Balm
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Sample of Udder Cream (that I randomly had)
- Body Wash
- Shampoo & Conditioner
- Moisturizer
- Contact Solution
- Contact Case
- Extra pairs of contacts
- Lavender Mint Lotion that smells like a spa day
- Hand sanitizer
My sister-in-law also sent me (in addition to the makeup wipes, hair ties and lip balm) an assortment of snacks:
- Large bag of M&Ms
- Box of granola bars
- Box of Special K breakfast bars
Those are tucked into the side pockets so I know just where to find them!
I think I'm pretty set! I also think that I'll end up wearing the hospital issued gowns and undies most of the time I'm there, just for the ease of check-ups and such. But I'm glad I have options in case I'm like, "I must put on pants!" And I think having my own toiletries is going to make me feel much better. I know I feel better traveling anywhere when I have familiar things to groom with. There are, of course, a few things that I will need to throw in the bag the day of:
- My glasses
- A brush
- A makeup bag (even though I probably won't use any)
And I have a separate backpack that Dan is bringing with our other necessities:
- Our Canon Rebel camera
- Camera charger
- Phone charger
- Laptop (for sending announcement emails)
- Baby Book (for recording his stats)
- Magazines
- Skip-Bo and/or Phase 10
- Portable speakers
Again, some of these "time passers" will surely go untouched but it'll be nice to know we have them.
And, of course, Dan is throwing some clothes into the carry-on for himself and he has a little toiletry bag ready to through in the other bag. And I am also bringing my birth ball and my playlist of songs on iTunes, ready to go.
After delivery, I'll revisit this post and make a finalized list of things I used versus things that I didn't touch and things I wish I had. But I'd love to hear what you "been there, done that" mamas think. Anything I've missed??

Jungle Nursery - Complete!
Our baby's room is my favorite place these days. I'm so pleased with how it all came together and excited to share it with you!
If you've been reading along for awhile, then you may remember that this room used to be my husband's office. He works from home and for the first three years we lived in LA, we lived in a one-bedroom apartment so his office was in our bedroom. When we moved to our current two-bedroom I was thrilled that he had his own space! Not only because that meant our bedroom was only a bedroom but also because he works with an east coast company, on east coast time, and work starts before the sun rises here. So in our old place, when his day started I'd head out to the couch to sleep a bit more. Well, now with baby on the way, his office is back in our bedroom. But it all works out because, 1. There is a daybed in the nursery where I now go instead of a couch and 2. Once baby gets here, sleeping in a little longer won't be an option anyway!
Ok! Enough of the backstory....onto the good stuff!
It all started with this picture. When I was in high school, I must have been going through a giraffe-phase where I couldn't get enough of cute giraffe pictures and prints. So my mom gave me this picture. And I remember thinking then that one day, when I had a child, I wanted that picture to go in their room. It's called "First Kiss" and it melts my heart. Now, half a lifetime later, it's hanging in my son's room and has inspired the entire motif for his nursery.
The nursery was set to have a "jungle theme" based on the giraffe picture but I was specific in how I wanted it to look. "Jungle theme" for nurseries is very hot right now and it seems to range from cartoonish to very sophisticated. I didn't want the room or its accents to be too cartoonish but I did want it to still be whimsical. The really sophisticated nurseries out there are beautiful but I wanted the room to reflect the fact that it's for a baby. I knew wall decals would be a great way to incorporate the jungle vision, especially since we live in an apartment and decals are removable. I scoured Pinterest and Etsy, looking for the perfect decals but ended up being totally surprised by these safari silhouettes I found at Target. For twenty bucks these decals had the right colors and the right balance of whimsy. Plus the decals are a great decoration to go above his crib since we live in earthquake country and a tremor could mean things falling off the walls. Didn't want anything heavy on the wall by his crib for that reason!
I kind of dislike mobiles. I couldn't find any that weren't plastic and gaudy and obnoxious looking to me (I'm pregnant - things offend me easily). But then we saw this adorable elephant mobile on clearance at BuyBuy Baby. It's a stuffed animal! And it plays Brahm's Lullaby. And the colors were perfect. And there's a little mirror on the elephant's belly to keep Baby entertained. Plus, when he outgrows the mobile, we can take it off the hook and he has a new stuffed animal. Double duty! The mobile isn't available on BuyBuy Baby's site anymore but I found it on Amazon (link above).
Speaking of stuffed animals, this kid already has a little jungle accumulating. The monkey and elephant are from his Mimi (my mom), the lion is from my cousin and the giraffe is from my best friend. It's actually a sound machine with white noise and jungle songs that can be attached to his stroller, car seat, crib, etc. The little good morning pillow has the inverse colors on the back and it says "good night." Another clearance find, this time at Bed, Bath and Beyond. It's Kate Spade though so I googled it but only found eBay listings. Sorry! The jungle pillowcase/bedding is from Target.
In love with this changing table. Again, space is not exactly something we have tons of, so finding a corner changing table with a hamper underneath it was ideal! The top drawer is full of newborn-sized diapers, ready to go. I'll figure out how to best use the shelves as we actually use the table. Also, you may have noticed in the first picture of this post that there is a yellow tissue ball hanging above the changing table. I like to think of it as the sun to the safari decal scene. Plus it gives Baby something to look at while I wipe his poo. I got my table from Overstock but they don't seem to have it anymore. But they do have it on Amazon, which is where the link above goes to.
And finally, the rug and curtains. I splurged a bit on this rug and I'm glad I did! It is very soft and doesn't feel as much like an area rug as it does plush carpeting. The colors are perfect and versatile enough that as Baby outgrows this look, I can use the rug in nearly any other room I want. For the curtains, I originally wanted to custom make my own. I looked up tutorials, went to the fabric store, picked some out and then thought, Nope, this isn't worth it. I don't know how much longer we'll be in this apartment and the savings making it myself weren't significant enough to justify the effort. So we snagged these from Bed, Bath and Beyond. They are green with light yellow woven into it. They remind me of grass, which goes along with the safari/jungle theme. Done!
I am a little worried about Baby peeing on the curtains but I'm pretty sure they're machine washable, so that's good. Plus, I can always move the curtain over a bit but I've heard these babies have impressive range.

Target |
JCP.com |
Love the lines of this crib, as well as the height of the bars. And, of course, the mattress can be lowered as he gets bigger. I was surprised at how difficult it was to find a crib I liked. I wanted just simple and rectangular but there are a lot of curvy cribs out there. And even though I thought I wanted simple some were just...too boring. The details of the back of this crib, since it's higher and has the three panels, are what really sold me. (PS - if you like this crib too, it's on sale right now. Holla!)
Mobile |
Giraffe |
My absolute favorite part of the room is the art gallery that is above the daybed. This is all original artwork done by Baby S.'s family so it is extra special. Our thirteen-year-old niece painted the monkey, Baby's daddy painted the elephants and I did the rest. There's still room for growth and we hope that family and friends get inspired to add to the gallery!
Ikea |
Closet space is at a premium in our little apartment so large functional dressers are a must. We found this one at Ikea. The front of the drawers are a frosted plexiglass but it isn't nearly as see-through in person as it looks in the picture (darn flashes!). I organized his clothes by size, so top drawer is 0-3 months, second is 3-6 months, and so on. Bottom two drawers are housing his towels and bedding and blankets. That's the system for now...we'll see how it evolves!
Elephant Lamp |
Close-up of the top of the dresser. Yes, we think we're going with the name Owen! Of course, that can change if he comes out looking like a different name, but we don't have a back up so an alternative name will have to be very obvious. Wanted to show you the elephant lamp closer. Saw it and loved the color. Didn't get it right away though because sometimes I'm slow to pull the trigger but the husband surprised me and brought it home one day. The wooden giraffe pull toy we found at an antique store. And the picture of us from the baby shower will most likely be replaced with an adorable picture of the baby once he arrives.
Corner Changing Table |
Bookshelf is from Ikea, but they don't seem to have it online. It was only $30 or so, so if you have a store near you, it's a good snag. |
The bookshelf took a minute to grow on me. At first I thought it was too tall but now I love it. I love how each little space is a vignette that I can use for books or storage boxes. I love how the storage boxes hide toys while adding color. And I love that the top of the shelf can have little knickknacks on it. Here are a few close-ups:
His first library |
The alphabet book my friends made at our baby shower. |
His first shoes! The crocheted ones were made by his Aunt Jenny and the Toms and mocassins are from our dear friends who are also expecting their first child - due a month after us! |
Rug / Curtains |
Phew! That was a lot of pictures and this post has gotten quite long. If you're still reading, kudos to you! Go get yourself a snack...you deserve it. And yes, that last statement is a bit of me talking to myself as well. I mean, we both deserve a snack at this point.

13 Days Until Due Date: What I'll Miss
Time is winding down and I'm getting a little nostalgic. My first baby is almost here and I cannot wait to meet him! And since I'm getting more and more uncomfortable in my own body and more and more cranky with my lack of sleep, I thought it'd be a good time to reflect on all that I'm going to miss about this nine month journey instead of focusing on the things that I'm ready to let go of (I'm looking at you, sore hips).
- Naps. I may not be sleeping well at night but I can nap like a champ! And there is no guilt about taking the time to catch up on zzz's. Sleep is going to take on a whole new meaning once Baby arrives so right now I'm luxuriating in the naivete of my "tiredness" and "lack of sleep." My recliner/rocker is one of my favorite places and is where you can usually find me.
- Friendliness. The world is a kinder place when you're pregnant. People smile at you as you walk by. They offer their seats to you. They spontaneously yell out, "Congratulations!" like they can't help themselves. Conversations are started more easily and the world seems to be rooting for you. It's quite lovely and I'm going to try to remember that when people are sending me death-ray stares as my baby is crying in public.
- Newness. I'll only be pregnant for the first time, one time. And it has been so fun sharing this experience with my family, friends and now you guys - my blog readers. We had fun and personalized ways to share the news with each of our family and friends and made some pretty great memories as they found out. Their screams of surprise and excitement were all captured and we edited together the highlights into some of my favorite videos. And while I hope to have more children in the future, the reception of that announcement will be different. Surely as special but, no doubt, different.
- Down-Time. I'm the first to admit that my relatively easy pregnancy has to be attributed in large part to my relatively easy schedule. Being an actor, employment is not steady. Which is a hard thing to deal with most of the time...until you're pregnant. Sure, I've gone on auditions, taken classes and stayed active career-wise during this pregnancy but I haven't had a steady job. I've had residuals from commercials coming in and I've had an incredibly supportive husband which means I've been lucky enough to make my own schedule. I've been able to take the time to exercise, prepare healthy meals, and rest when I need to. I've made my health and well-being a priority during these past nine months and as a result, have felt pretty great. Once Baby arrives, that "down-time" is going to be a thing of the past. And there is no way the next pregnancy is going to be as smooth as this one when I'm running after a toddler!
- Movement. I've talked enough on here about how active my little guy is in my belly. Always kicking, stretching, moving around. And in the past few weeks, that movement has become a little painful - I'm not going to lie. But I'll miss it. It's something that only he and I will ever share. And while I know actually holding him is going to be so much more rewarding and special, at this moment in time it's something that I'll miss.
And the top five things I can't wait to get back once the baby is born?

Ok, fine, maybe those are the top five food things I can't wait to get back. What can I say? I'm hungry ALL THE TIME.

Recipe: Chocolate Banana WOW Muffins
I don't know what it is about these last few weeks of pregnancy but I have been craving baked goods like nobody's business. I'm talking muffins, cakes, cupcakes. Is there chocolate in the recipe? Even better. This may not sound odd to you - a pregnant woman craving cake is certainly no anomaly - but for me, this entire pregnancy thus far has been the exact opposite. Cake? No thank you. I'll take strawberries instead. A muffin? Nope, I'll just have eggs for breakfast. So this sudden switch is quite jarring. And the scale is proving it. But I can't. Stop. Baking. Or. Eating.
One of my favorite discoveries during this baking frenzy has been, hands down, these amazing Chocolate Banana Muffins. I've dubbed them Chocolate Banana "WOW" Muffins because that's how it feels when I eat them. The first dozen I made, I literally let my husband have one of them. The rest I happily and greedily ate all by myself. This past weekend I made another batch and decided to share...with the neighbors down the street. You see, the weekend before, Dan and I were on a walk and saw a couple with a brand new baby a few doors down from us. Of course I had to stop and ask how old their baby was and she was a fresh one-week old! The four of us ended up chatting for a bit and turns out our neighbor delivered at the same hospital I'm delivering at and, believe it or not, has the same doctor as me! This is a big coincidence, especially in LA. It was great meeting them and surprising that we hadn't seen them around before. So when I had some overripe bananas in the kitchen on Friday and the urge to bake more muffins, I thought it'd be nice to bring some down to them. I hope the muffins came in handy when they needed a quick breakfast or snack. The half dozen I kept for myself? Those are long gone...

- Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.

Super Bowl: And I didn't go into labor!
My husband is from Baltimore and a big Ravens fan, therefore, when we got married I too became a big Ravens fan (don't worry, he became a big Gators fan for me). So, needless to say, the Super Bowl was a big deal in our house yesterday.

We woke up ready to go! Instead of having a party we decided to keep it to the two of us for two reasons. One: We actually wanted to watch the game and none of our friends around here are big Ravens fans...or huge football fans for that matter. It's too easy to become a bad host when you're invested in the game. And two: People are still getting sick around these parts and we are being extra cautious during these last two weeks of pregnancy. I am the type of person who loves having friends over and hates to say no when friends suggest meeting up. So this lockdown hasn't been the easiest for me. But I keep reminding myself that it's just for a few weeks. Then, of course, it's a whole 'nother story once Baby arrives but I'll cross that bridge when we get there!
We had a great time watching the game together. We had been to the Outback the day before and picked up a couple orders of wings for the game and I made my famous game-day nachos. I hear spicy food can put you into labor...but that wasn't the case yesterday!
No labor. Only some 2AM heartburn. |
One thing that did almost put me into labor was how close the game got after the black out! You should have heard me scream when Ray Rice fumbled the ball! I actually had a few friends check in with me via text to see how I was doing. They know me well. And I'm not kidding...I did have a small contraction. But I've been having little contractions on and off throughout the weekend. Nothing regular and nothing debilitating. But a definite increase in Braxton Hicks. And sharp pains in my pelvis when walking. Those I have to take a moment to breathe through. My husband went on my walks with me over the weekend and it was good to have him there to squeeze his arm! While the contractions are definitely nothing substantial yet, it's reassuring knowing that my body is preparing for the big day.
I missed the end of the game when the 49ers were in the endzone because I was covering my face with a pillow - the stress was too much! Thank goodness for replays. And thank goodness the Ravens won! We've got a little Flacco jersey all ready to go for our little one when he arrives. And when football season comes back in the fall, his dresser is already stocked with several Ravens onesies to show his team spirit. It's fun being Number One.

February 2013!
I've been eagerly anticipating this month since June of last year and now it's here. We found out we were expecting on June 13, 2012 and first heard our baby's heartbeat on July 11, 2012. That date carried extra significance because it marked the year anniversary of my grandfather passing. One heartbeat faded and a year later, we heard another one beginning. A poignant day full of reflection, gratitude and hope. And now, nearly nine months later, we sit and wonder about each twitch and twinge...hoping our little one decides to join us sooner than later. We can't wait to meet him and know he'll come when he's ready...but you can't blame a first time momma for hoping for "sooner!" Our baby is officially full-term as of this past Wednesday and according to the doctor, he is growing normally, is head down and has a strong heartbeat. All music to my ears. It could be tomorrow, it could be two weeks from now. Heck, it could be three weeks if this guy is really comfortable where he's at. But one thing is for sure: In a matter of days, our lives will change forever. We're ready, Baby! Welcome to your birth month!
I've never been so excited to change our calendar than this morning. The caption for that cute puppy eyeing the donut is: "Keep your eye on the prize." Fitting, no? |
